This painting soft launches my new series "Scribbles"
I’m fascinated by people.
I’m fascinated by the things we create and the universal things that connect us. You know, food, music, art, culture. The stuff we make when we’re not being complete idiots.
It got me thinking about whether there was a universal way people expressed themselves visually, the way almost every culture has some version of a drum. Something that we all do that connects us.
I needed to sign a painting that day. I reached for my pen, realizing I hadn’t done this in a while and didn’t know whether the pen would work, so I got a piece of paper to test it.
And there it was. The scribble.
The scribble, as an idea, is quite interesting. By definition it means to write or draw quickly or carelessly. It takes absolutely no skill to scribble. Everyone can do it. It’s a perfect juxtaposition for making something meaningful.
The action itself is quick and careless. But what if it wasn’t?
It once again reminded me of real life and how the same action can be used to do two very different things. You can talk to connect or to spew hatred. You can march for peace or towards war. You can even lie with the intention to protect or to hurt.
What if I took the careless scribble and use that to depict how beautiful people can be?
